From A Hobby Into A Business: Baking Bread And Other Sweets In Singapore

The meaning of work in society has become a tedious routine for me. No matter how much I try, nothing works—I end up being in the wrong, and my bosses never stop nagging me around to the point I almost lose respect for myself. Luckily, I still have my baking skills with me. When I am stressed, baking chocolate chip cookies and other recipes is my only source of relief.

For the past five years of being an employee for the same company, overworking, getting stressed, and baking were my routine until I had enough—or should I say my friends had enough. After listening to my rants and complaints, they jokingly said, ‘Why don’t you start a business with your wholegrain bread and other sweet recipes?’

I thought they only said that because they wanted to flatter me, but one of my friends stated, ‘we have been eating your baked goods since college, and they taste better than the ones in every cafe we have visited. There are no sugar-coated words here.

Big Decision Made

I contemplated for months after that conversation with my college friends before I gave in, and  I decided to turn my hobby into a business. I knew it was a big decision, so I did not file my resignation immediately.

While working as an employee, I used my free time to refine my business plan. If I wanted to maximise my savings, having a brick-and-mortar location was not an option. The leasing fee would only add to my expenses, and there was no guarantee that people would visit and buy my baked goods in person.

Instead of leasing a commercial place, I revamped my HDB unit. I added shelves where I could store different types of flour, like all purpose flour in Singapore.  I thought that if I was going to sell my baked goods, I should expand the recipes I knew so my customers would have more options to choose from my shop.

My Tips To Make Your Life Easier When You Turn Your Hobby Into A Business

·        Test Your Idea

A successful business has gone through several ups and downs. Before I opened my shop, I experimented with different baked goods. When I bakedJapanese bread, I used the wrong flour in Singapore.  My go-to supplier educated me on this matter and introduced me to different types of Japanese bread flour that I could use for baking.

·        Learn Marketing Basics

In addition to baking things, I also have to advertise my company. I could not even afford to hire an employee at a startup. I took digital marketing courses to understand the fundamentals in my spare time. To advance your marketing campaigns, take into account performing the same.

Do I Recommend Prima Flour?

Without a doubt! They have been my flour supplier for the past three years since I began turning my hobby into a business. When they noticed I had no idea about wholemeal flour benefits, they explained everything to me before I ordered it from them years ago.
